It may be difficult to believe that 50 years have passed since the first Super Bowl game was played on January 15th, 1967. So much in the world has changed since then—technology, politics, civil rights, and more. In 50 years of Super Bowl games, athletes, musicians, coaches, fans, cheerleaders, broadcasters and more have marked the passing years and everything they’ve brought.
We’d like to take this chance to look back at the Super Bowl—because some amazing things have happened, and some remarkable records were made.
Super Bowl Teams
Did you know that Dallas, New England, and Pittsburgh have each played in eight games—the most on record for any team? Buffalo played the Super Bowl four years in a row, holding the record for most consecutive games played. With six wins under their belt, Pittsburgh leads the charge on most games won, while Buffalo lost the most consecutive games (those same four mentioned earlier). Denver has lost the most non-consecutive Super Bowl games.
Super Bowl XXVII had the most fumbles (Buffalo vs. Dallas). Which game had the most recovered fumbles? Dallas vs. Denver, in 1978. Ten years later, the Washington vs. Denver game saw the most yards gained at a whopping 602!
Three games tie for the most field goals—XXIII (1989), XXVIII (1994), and XLVII (2013).
Super Bowl X, Dallas vs. Baltimore, holds the record for the most yards penalized for a game at 133.
Team records are a point of pride, entertainment, and act as a legacy for the sport of football. Every year is another opportunity to set a new record—a new opportunity to teams to make their mark on Super Bowl history.
Football Players
You may already know that Jerry Rice holds the record for most points scored in a career—and that number is 48—all earned in four games played for San Francisco. You might know too that he holds the record for the most Super Bowl career touchdowns at eight (in those same four games). He also holds the record for the most career yards gained (604). Let’s just say when it comes to football and the history of the sport, Rice was pretty amazing.
What about Jacoby Jones, though, who, in 2013, gained 290 yards? That is an impressive amount of yardage. Where most sacks in a Super Bowl game are concerned, the record is three, with both Reggie White and Darnell Dockett tied.
Professional football players have done awe-inspiring things on the field these last 50 years…it’s exciting to think of what records they might break in the next 50.
