AC/DC issued a statement on April 16 confirming rumors that lead singer Brian Johnson is leaving the band. Guns N’ Roses lead singer Axl Rose, who is scheduled to begin a reunion tour with that band soon, will take over as lead singer for AC/DC for the rest of their Rock or Bust Tour in Europe.
Johnson, the longtime AC/DC lead singer, was forced to quit touring with the band after doctors warned him that continuing to do so could permanently damage his hearing and possibly lead to total hearing loss. The band members thanked Johnson in the statement for his contributions and dedication to AC/DC over the many years of their career.
The statement said that although the band would have preferred to continue the rest of the tour with Johnson, they understood, respected, and supported his decision to stop touring in order to preserve his hearing. They wished him the best with his health and any future endeavors.
The band said they are dedicated to playing the rest of the tour dates to which they had previously committed. They thanked Axl Rose for offering to support them by performing as lead singer so they could continue touring.
AC/DC currently has tour dates scheduled in Portugal, Spain, France, Belgium, Austria, the Czech Republic, Germany, Switzerland, England, and Denmark. The European leg of the tour will conclude in Aarhus, Denmark on June 12.
After AC/DC’s European tour dates are wrapped up, Axl Rose will perform with Guns N’ Roses on their Not in This Lifetime Summer Stadium Tour. The AC/DC shows in the United States that were canceled after Johnson was forced to leave the band will be rescheduled with Rose performing as lead singer.
