Phish are in the midst of recording their new album, which comes just two years after their previous release, Fuego. They will play several new songs when they begin their summer tour in Saint Paul, Minnesota on June 22.
New Phish Album in the Works
Guitarist Trey Anastasio said in an interview with Rolling Stone published on May 26 that the recording sessions are going well. He said all of the band members are performing at the top of their game. They are recording and mixing songs in several locations, including Nashville, Manhattan, and some band members’ houses. They are working with producer Bob Ezrin and a team of engineers in his studio, as well as at a studio called Ronnie’s Place where they recorded Fuego.
Anastasio said in the interview that the band members seem more unified and in sync now than at other times. All of them are contributing songs for the new album. He says the new cohesion may be related to the fact that all of the band members are over 50.
The band has been playing more original music and fewer covers recently. This is because they realized they did not play some of their favorite songs on previous tours, and also because they are working on a new album.
Other Projects
Anastasio performed with the Grateful Dead for their Fare Thee Well shows in California and Chicago. He said the experience helped him as a musician because it forced him to step outside his comfort zone and to learn 100 new songs, many of which used chord progressions he was not accustomed to using. He also did an orchestra tour, a TAB tour, and a Phish tour last year.
Striking a Balance
Anastasio said the band members are trying to strike a balance between recording and performing with the band and spending time with their families. Most of the members have young children. He thinks their music sounds better because they have achieved a balance.
