Visiting Broadway to see your favorite performance is definitely a Holiday must. However, how do I see my favorite theatre show for less?
When it comes to the Holidays, as the song says, “it’s the most wonderful time of the year.” Nowhere in the world is that more true than in New York City. There’s no shortage of magical things to do in New York during the Holiday season, from the lighting of the tree in Rockefeller Center to window shopping in Lower Manhattan and SoHo. If you’re really looking for something spectacular, though, nothing beats taking in a Broadway show.
Every year Broadway lights up with iconic Christmas favorites like the Radio City Christmas Spectacular and The Nutcracker, as well as new favorites like A Charlie Brown Christmas. If you’d like to take in a Holiday show on Broadway this year, you’re probably at least a little bit concerned about the cost. Rightfully so! The Holidays are one of Broadway’s peak seasons, and for all its charms no one ever said Broadway was cheap. Take heart though, savvy theatre goers can save money on Broadway tickets during the holidays by following a few simple tips.
Go during a weekday.
Demand for Broadway shows is highest during the weekend, especially Friday and Saturday nights. If you can, go during a weeknight. Tickets are usually 10% – 15% cheaper in order to bring in bigger crowds.
Use a student ID.
Many box offices and other ticket sellers offer modest discounts to purchasers with valid student IDs. This won’t do much good for the over-21 set (unless you and your ID have both aged very well), but for college kids looking to take in a little culture it’s worth keeping in mind.
Get discounted tickets on the day of the show.
Venues usually put up unsold tickets for discounted prices at the last minute. The seats might not be the best, and are often for standing room only, but try going to the venue a few hours before the show starts to see what’s available. There are also TKTS Booths throughout Manhattan offering same-day Broadway tickets at a discount. But remember, with this tactic nothing is guaranteed. You take what you can get, if it’s anything at all.
