moe., is a jam band that was formed while the members were attending the University at Buffalo in Buffalo, NY. The band is made up of Rob Derhak (bass, vocals), Al Schnier (guitar, vocals, keyboard), Chuck Garvey (guitar, vocals), Vinnie Amico (drums), and Jim Loughlin (percussion).
Guitarist Al Schnier was asked to describe moe., “It’s an amalgamation of a wide variety of the history of rock, all regurgitated and recycled through the eyes, ears, hands, whatever of the guys in our band and all of that with a sense of adventure, a sense of humor, also a constant desire to push the envelope. All in this arena of taking chances, improvising live, and making things up on the spot.”
Their first record, Fatboy (1992), put them on the map of the jam band and improvisational rock scene. Also during that time period, 1990’s, you had the rise of such bands as Phish and Widespread Panic which opened the door for moe. to become even more popular. Tickets for their concerts as you can imagine became increasing popular and the band started playing larger and larger venues. Avid moe. fans became known as “moe.rons.”
moe. started gaining more and more popularity by touring with the 1997 Furthur Festival, and even appeared at Woodstock ’99. They also played Summerstage at the Rumsey Playfield, opened for The Allman Brothers and The Who, performed at Radio City Music Hall on New Year’s Eve 2006. They have also performed at the ever so popular Bonnaroo Music Festival 5 times.
