The Holiday season officially kicks off in Manhattan, NY with the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade and Santa Claus riding down Sixth Avenue. Millions of people will once again kick off Thanksgiving by watching the parade from the city or the comfort of their homes. Below are 5 fun and strange facts about the parade.

Santa Claus has been the finale of the parade every year except for in 1933. That particular year, he led the parade.
The parade movie scenes in the 1947 holiday classic, “Miracle on 34th Street,” are actual shots of the 1946 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.
Since 1968, there have been seven different Snoopy balloons in the parade’s history, the most for any one character. There has been “Flying Ace Snoopy,” “Astronaut Snoopy” and even “Millennium Snoopy.”
When the first parade was held on Thanksgiving Day in 1924 it was called the “Macy’s Christmas Parade.”
In 1924 the parade featured live animals including elephants however starting with the 1927 parade, the live animals were out and were replaced with inflatable animals.

Mariah Carey, Jordin Sparks, Train, Daughtry and more will headline the 89th Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.

The 89th annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade on November 26th will feature Mariah Carey, Jordin Sparks, Daughtry.

The NBC Today show cast of Matt Lauer, Savannah Guthrie and Al Roker will host the broadcast. The parade airs live from New York City on Thanksgiving morning, November 26th.

This years lineup will also feature a ton of musical artists including: Andy Grammer, Train, Rachel Platten, Pat Benatar and Neil Giraldo, Shawn Mendes, Andra Day, Panic! at the Disco, Plain White T’s, Prince Royce, MercyMe, MIPSO, Jake Owen, Trey Songz and Questlove, who will be joined by The Muppets of Sesame Street.

Broadway will be making an appearance with the cast of School of Rock, Fiddler on the Roof, Finding Neverland, The King & I, On Your Feet and Something Rotten. Other notables are NHL athletes Mark and Marty Owen, Cirque de Soleil, Sandra Lee, Miss America 2016 Betty Cantrell and Disney Descendents stars Sofia Carson and Dove Cameron.

Finally, parade fans will see a special sneak preview from NBC’s The Wiz Live!, which premieres December 3rd.

Every CMA Entertainer of the Year nominee except for Garth Brooks is slated to perform. He could be added soon. That’s Kenny Chesney, Miranda Lambert, Luke Bryan and Eric Church, plus about two dozen other country superstars.

Rockers John Mellencamp and Fall Out Boy will take the stage with Keith Urban and Thomas Rhett respectively. Lindsey Stirling will bring her electronic violin to the stage for Dierks Bentley‘s performance.

Nominees:

Little Big Town and Church grabbed the most CMA attention. Newcomer Chris Stapleton also did very well, coming from nowhere to grab three nods!
