In 1997, Dark Star originates out of Chicago, IL when guitarist John Kadlecik contacted keyboardist Scott Larned with an idea. The idea was to perform shows out of the history of the Grateful Dead. The band was formed with great attention to detail. Each member of the Grateful Dead’s history is accounted for in the Dark Star Orchestra, creating a sound that is recreating the Dead. Since forming, the band has performed over 2,500 shows.
They have grown continually over the years, playing at larger venues and theaters, collaborating with guests including Grateful Dead alumni Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, Bill Kreutzmann, Donna Jean Godchaux-Mackay, Vince Welnick, and Tom Constanten.
In 2005, co-founder Scott Larned died of a heart attack during their spring tour, and Rob Barraco was selected as the permanent replacement in 2007. DSO went from playing small clubs to selling out large venues across the world.
