The Tampa Bay Rays finished third in the American League East in the 2017 MLB Season. The Rays finished with 80 wins and missed the MLB Playoffs. Look for the Tampa Bay Rays to rebound for the 2018 MLB season and make a run at the 2018 MLB Playoffs.
The Tampa Bay Rays are based in St. Petersburg, FL. The Rays compete in the American League East division. The team’s home venue is Tropicana Field.
In 1995, the Tampa Bay area received their first MLB team. The ownership group was led by Vince Naimoli. The Tampa Bay Devil Rays began play in the 1998 MLB season.
Their first decade of play, however, was marked by futility; they finished in last place in the American League East in all but the 2004 season, when they finished second-to-last. In 2007, Stuart Sternberg, who had purchased controlling interest in the team from Vince Naimoli, changed the team’s name from “Devil Rays” to “Rays”, now meant to primarily refer to a burst of sunshine rather than a manta ray, though a manta ray logo remains on the uniform sleeves.
In 2008, the Tampa Bay Rays saw their first winning season, their first AL East championship, and their first pennant. They went on to lose to the Philadelphia Phillies in the World Series that year.
The Tampa Bay Rays’ chief rivals are the Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees.
