The Houston Astros had a 103-game winning 2018 MLB season. The Astros finished 1st in the American League West however went on to lose to the Boston Red Sox in the American League Division Championship. Look for the Astros to make a strong run to the 2019 World Series this season.
In 1965, the MLB saw the birth of the Houston Astros. Although the team was started three years earlier they were known then as the Houston Colt .45s. The Astros were the first team to play indoors by constructing the Astrodome which allowed baseball fans to sit in AC rather than the stifling heat of the Texas sun.
In 1979, the State of Texas was introduced to Nolan Ryan. After a decade of losing seasons Ryan brought two consecutive MLB playoffs seasons his first two years. He is arguably the best pitcher to play for the Houston Astros. Ryan set many records over his career including the record for most no-hitters thrown (only the third pitcher to throw no-hitters in both leagues) and broke the all-time strikeout record. The Houston Astros had his #34 retired in 1996.
In 2000, the Astros saw the end of an era with the Astrodome. The team moved into the brand-new Minute Maid Park. The park features a retractable roof and when closed the facility can be air conditioned. The stadium seats around 42,000 Astros fans on game day.
The Houston Astros two most recognizable names, one was known as the greatest Houston Astros player of all time, played for the team in the 90’s. Craig Biggio and Jeff Bagwell were their names and they were known as the “Killer B’s”. Bagwell won the MVP in 1994 and finished his career as the Houston Astros career leader in home runs, RBIs, walks, sacrifice flies and intentional walks.
The Astros play in the American League West with the Los Angeles Angels, Oakland Athletics, Seattle Mariners and Texas Rangers. They have won one National League pennant in 2005.
